The Shinola Hotel in downtown Detroit is a groundbreaking venture that reimagines the intersection of retail and hospitality. This boutique establishment is a collaboration between Shinola, the Detroit-based luxury watch and leather goods manufacturer, and Bedrock, a prominent real estate firm owned by billionaire Dan Gilbert, known for his ownership of Rocket Mortgage, Quicken Loans, and the Cleveland Cavaliers., this project represents the first foray into hospitality for Shinola, known for its timeless craftsmanship and quality. The hotel seamlessly blends Detroit’s rich architectural history with modern design, turning a nearly full city block into a vibrant hub for guests and locals alike.
The property combines restored historic buildings, including the T.B. Rayl & Co. department store and a Singer sewing-machine shop, with new constructions, creating a harmonious mix of old and new. Gachot Studios and Kraemer Design Group led the design efforts, ensuring every detail reflects Shinola's ethos of meticulous craftsmanship. This thoughtful integration sets the stage for a unique guest experience that feels both rooted in Detroit’s heritage and forward-thinking.
Beyond its design, the Shinola Hotel transforms the neighborhood into a destination. Its diverse dining concepts, created by NoHo Hospitality Group, include The Brakeman, Penny Red’s, Mister Dips, and San Morello. These venues, combined with retail spaces featuring local and independent brands, create a bustling community atmosphere, seamlessly connecting the hotel to the city it calls home.
This project exemplifies the successful translation of a retail identity into a full-fledged hotel brand. By infusing Shinola’s DNA into every element of the guest experience, the hotel bridges the gap between retail and hospitality, offering a model for other lifestyle brands to follow.
